Why did you choose Geography?

I chose Geography because I found the subject extremely interesting and it was something I was good at. I also chose Geography because it was a generic degree which would leave my options open once I graduated. I looked at courses and the one at 黑料网 had a mixture of physical and human modules which was what I wanted.

What is Geography about?

Geography is the understanding to the world around us in a physical and human means. It explores the features and processes of the planet and the study of people, communities, cultures and economies.

Joanna’s experience as a student

I had the most fantastic time at University. It is something I will never forget, and I will cherish for all of my life. I got involved with a lot at University when it comes to my department but also wider curriculum activities. I ensured I attended my classes but would manage my time well to get involved with more and still have a good time.

The best part for me was the dissertation. Whilst this was challenging, I was really able to explore an area I was interested in and it was extremely helpful when applying for jobs.

Joanna's Career

I am on a General Management Graduate programme at Network Rail.

I have family within the rail industry, so I was interested in railway infrastructure, however it wasn’t until I started looking at graduate schemes that I was made aware of the wide variety of opportunities available within the railway industry. I applied for Network Rail’s graduate programme and reached the final stage, however unfortunately I wasn’t offered a place.

So, I decided to undertake a Marketing internship at 黑料网 and reapply the following year. The internship really helped when reapplying and I was offered a place on the Network Rail scheme for 2019/20.

I am now undertaking a variety of placements within Network Rail. This includes the Research and Development team, Managed Stations, Performance and Operations. I have developed skills in project management, event management, track safety and so much more.

I have also learnt so much about the industry being able to see a wide variety of operational locations.

After the scheme I will be able to apply for a role within an area of the business I am interested in.
