Our MSc in Cyber Resilience goes beyond conventional cyber security to focus not only the prevention of cyber-attacks, but also on maintaining services during an attack and rapid recovery afterwards. This programme is provisionally certified by the NCSC (National Cyber Security Council) and will equip you with a powerful skillset highly prized by employers throughout the world-wide digital economy, now and for the foreseeable future.

The cyber domain is vast. It incorporates all digital devices and all digital communications, across all time frames. Your car, your archived health data, your social media interactions, your financial information, even your electricity supply are all affected. It’s a multifaceted domain that goes beyond just technical computing. Organisational processes, individual human behaviours, wider societal norms, and the physical environment all matter. Ultimately, the goal of cyber resilience is to ensure that critical services which people rely on continue to operate even when attacked. 

This MSc has been designed to consider resilience from a range of perspectives: data, code, the individual, the organisation, and the environment. Taught by leading experts and informed by our strong links with the UK and international cyber industry, the programme augments traditional cyber security with resilience thinking, with a rich depth and breadth to the modules which will build your expertise in aspects of the cyber domain. 

Expert teaching for practical application 

The teaching on the programme has a strong, applied focus bringing real-world insight into the learning environment. Assessment similarly has a strong, practical focus. Typical assessments are based around realistic, practical scenarios - risks need managing, incidents need attributing, systems need configuring. To do well, you will need both to deal with the requirements of the scenario, and critically evaluate what you did.

Our Cyber Resilience MSc covers specialist modules that will provide you with a solid foundation in the core areas of this exciting subject.

Compulsory modules

The aims of the module are to:

  • introduce core cyber resilience concepts that may be developed further by subsequent modules
  • introduce the cyber resilience teaching and learning environment
  • inspire students to develop independent postgraduate study skills
  • encourage students to develop a responsible attitude towards collaborative learning and authentic assessment

The aims of the module are to:

  • introduce industry standard approaches to cyber risk management
  • sensitise students to ambiguous imterpretation of words and numbers concerning cyber risk

The aims of the module are to:

  • introduce relationships between: abstract mathematics; abstract cryptographic algorithms; schemes and protocols; concrete realisation of cryptographic algorithms, schemes and protocols; day to day cryptographic usage
  • establish the significance of cryptographic hashes, symmetric encryption, public key encryption and hybrid schemes
  • develop the concepts of "difficulty" and "cryptographic strength" and their resilience to the passage of time
  • emphasise the significance of the cryptographic key lifecycle

The aims of the module are to:

  • introduce the strengths and limitations of a range of AI approaches
  • identify how AI solutions might be degraded by purposeful attack
  • provide opportunities to experiment with AI tools and techniques

Compulsory modules

The aims of the module are to:

  • establish the relationship between abstract layered protocols and the dominant Ethernet plus Internet Protocol network stacks
  • develop skills in the capture and analysis of network traffic
  • provide opportunities to configure network components and endpoints

The aims of the module are to:

  • define the important properties, characteristics and metrics concerning cyber resilience in the face of cyber incidents
  • introduce standard approaches to cyber security incident response
  • introduce digital forensic processes and provide opportunities to apply digital forensic processes in the attribution of responsibility for an incident 

The aims of the module are to:

  • highlight the enormous extent of the evolving attack and defence landscape
  • establish the high-level goals of the various classifications of threat actors
  • introduce tools and techniques for the safe analysis of potential malware

The aims of the module are to:

  • introduce the facets of research from broad research philosophy to detailed data collection
  • develop critical analysis skills across a range of different sources
  • introduce ethical thinking into the development of an appropriate research methodology

Compulsory modules

The aims of the module are to give each student the chance to plan, conduct and report an investigation related to cyber resilience.

You will be assessed by a combination of technical reports, portfolios, posters, research proposals as well as a dissertaion on an agreed topic.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 75%-84%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

  • School of Business and Economics: not considered
  • All other programmes if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.
