Exam invigilation

The University recruits Exam Invigilators to assist with the invigilation of all in-person exams on campus each year. You can find more information below about the role of an invigilator and how to apply.

Semester 2: Tues 27 May to Weds 18 June 2025
SAP: Weds 27 August to Mon 8* September 2025

*Monday 8 September reserved solely for reassessment of Language modules

Invigilator roles and responsibilities

The role of the invigilator

Ensure that examinations are conducted in accordance with University Regulations to:

  • Ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.
  • Ensure the security of the examination papers and completed answer booklets.
  • Prevent possible student malpractice (cheating) and/or administrative failures.

Key duties

Prior to exam start

  • Setting up Exam Rooms, laying out papers, and other resources on individual desks.
  • Helping students to their allocated desks quickly and quietly.

During the exam

  • Supervising toilet and rest breaks.
  • Answering student queries.
  • Maintaining exam conditions within the venues.
  • Reporting any complex queries or suspected cases of academic misconduct to the Senior Invigilator.
  • Accurately recording any disturbances in the Exam Venue or suspected cases of academic misconduct. 

After the exam

  • Collect completed Exam papers and deliver these to the Senior Invigilator.
  • Escort students to Exams Office if required.
  • Assisting the Senior Invigilator and Exams Office with any other ad-hoc duties.

Essential criteria

We are looking for candidates with the following characteristics:

  • Confident with English language – will need to be able to interact with students and read out exam instructions at the start and end of the exam.
  • Reliable with good time-keeping skills.
  • Flexible and pro-active, with the ability to make decisions quickly and have confidence to deal with student queries.
  • Vigilant to prevent possible academic misconduct and challenge any unusual behaviour.
  • Competent computer user with basic understanding of MS Word.
  • Good attention to detail for checking student identification, confirming attendance, and checking exam paperwork.
  • Fit to stand for long periods of time (duties at our main venue require up to 3hrs of continuous standing).

Working patterns

Shifts are allocated using a system called “Dashboard” – you will be given access to Dashboard following appointment to the role and completion of your Right to Work checks.

Typical shift start times are detailed below. Shift end times can vary depending on the length of exam you are invigilating, but will typically be between 2.5 - 4 hours.

Invigilators are employed as casual workers and as such, there are no minimum number of hours guaranteed.

Rates of pay

Invigilators are paid an hourly rate of £13.45 (including holiday pay).

Who can apply

These roles are open to existing staff at the University, postgraduate research students and all external candidates with an adequate Right to Work status.

Undergraduate students and students on taught programmes unfortunately cannot work as Exam Invigilators.

However, please check back at a later date as we typically recruit ahead of Semester 1 and Semester 2 Exams which are held in May/June and January respectively.
