Background

ºÚÁÏÍø: Research Associate, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader 1986-2002; Professor of Applied Thermodynamics, 2002-2021; Emeritus Professor of Applied Thermodynamics, 2021-present. 

Colin is directly engaged with major international engine and vehicle companies. Early in his career he gained significant experience working on bus and rail vehicle development at what is now called Transport for London. He has served as an academic adviser to the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) Heavy Duty Vehicle Strategy Action Group, as a member of the Automotive Council R&D Group and as the technical director of the Caterpillar Innovation and Research Centre at ºÚÁÏÍø.  

He is a non-executive director of   a government-industry partnership supporting over £1.5 Billion of vehicle propulsion research and development projects across the UK.  

From 2005 to 2017 he was the Editor-in-Chief of Proc. IMechE: Journal of Automobile Engineering and he continues to serve on the journal’s editorial board.

Research interests and activities

Colin's research covers engine systems, fuels, thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, combustion and emissions control. His research has been featured in New Scientist and on BBC TV and radio. Additionally, he has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and has six granted patents. For more information, see .

Colin has held over 40 major research grants funded by UK government organisations and global industries, mainly in the automotive and powertrain sectors.
