Dr Eugénie Hunsicker, of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, has been awarded the AWM appointment “for leadership of the United Kingdom community of women in mathematics; tireless advocacy for women in mathematics everywhere through talks, writing, and the film ‘Faces of Women in Mathematics’; and application of mathematical and statistical expertise to research into equity and diversity issues facing the mathematical community”.

Dr Hunsicker – who is also the Director of Equality and Diversity for the School of Science, Chair of the London Mathematical Society Committee for Women and Diversity in Mathematics, Chair of the Athena Forum, and a trustee of the non-profit organisation Black Excellence, UK – released the ‘Faces of Women in Mathematics’ film to celebrate the 2018 International Women’s Day.

The 13-minute film she created with cinematographer Dr Irina Linke (her sister) comprises 146 clips of 243 women from around the world stating their name, nationality and that they are a mathematician.

It features 36 different countries and 31 languages, including Runyankole (Uganda), Malayalam (India) and Tagalog (Philippines).

Of the AWM appointment, Dr Hunsicker said: “I am really delighted to be selected along with so many other amazing women.

“As is usual when someone is recognised, I didn’t do things on my own!  So congratulations and thanks are also due to my colleagues working on EDI in the School of Science, the London Mathematical Society, the Athena Forum and Black Excellence, and particularly to my sister, Irina, who actually did all the hard work of editing for the film!”
